Treasure Hunting with Rodney In Central New York (Story 7)

I have known my buddy Rodney since 2001 when he just got into the hobby and tried to figure out the basic 'ins' and 'outs' of metal detecting. While he was learning the searching technique, I was doing a map research of the Capital region area and surroundings in New York state, to where I just moved from the Catskill Mountains of New York.

Like many metal detecting novices in the north-eastern US, Rodney dreamt of finding his first Large Cent coin. Since we met, we went metal detecting numerous times, both in the area around Albany and Anaphoric where Rodney is from.

But Rodney did not have any luck in finding a desirable coin. It was like a voodoo spell cast over him: he would find all other types of coins but the large cents.

Detecting the Farm in Upstate New York

In 2006, as usual in the fall, I came to visit Rodney and treasure hunt together in Canajoharie. By this time, we had prepared ourselves for the hunt: we seriously researched the local maps dated back to the 18th and 19th centuries, compared them to the modern topographic maps, and made copies of aerial photos of the area. Our research had resulted in discovering a few good metal detecting sites on the maps, and now we were ready to physically explore the sites!
