At sunrise, we came to the administrative boundary, marked by the end of asphalt road, between the Vologda and Yaroslavl regions.

From this point, it would be a rough ride for us: driving 300 miles on poor never-repaired roads is not the same as driving on a smooth highway. We would be lucky if our driving speed exceeded 40 miles per hour.

Despite the bumpy ride, I was in high spirits as I was about to discover many new things and explore the part of Central Russia where I had never been before.

The first thing I noticed in almost every village that we drove by was the presence of a church or monastery, either active or abandoned.
