Cache Hunting - Discovering A Hoard of Silver Hammered Coins (Story 14)

When the copper coin of imperfect round shape showed up in dirt, I knew that now I could place the date of the "party site" down across the 1700's time barrier.

Detecting 17th Century Coins

Through the dirt on a coin, I recognized the circular line of the obverse design that was struck off-center - a characteristic feature of the 17th century Swedish coins.

Too bad, the coin's condition was not very good due to the low quality of copper alloy which had been easily affected by the soil's mineralization. Coins of this type were minted in large quantities during the Sweden's occupation of the entire eastern Baltic Sea region where they are the common finds.

At this point, I decided to take a short break and check on my buddy Misha's progress. He was treasure hunting along the narrow and freshly plowed strip in the field. The field looked like it was plowed annually, but someone had recently plowed just this strip for some reason.

As I approached Misha, he showed me his last find - a nice bronze ring, which could be dated well back to the 16th century!
